The passing of an Era.

The wife of the late Ernie K-Doe passed away on MardiGras Day. She was quite the character, having a wax figure of Ernie made after his passing, but he was able to be at her Jazz Funeral.

She also owned and ran The Mother In Law lounge here in NOLA. Some may remember Ernie from the song, Mother In-Law.

I must say her funeral drew a crowd, and it was amazing to see the old and young musicians join together to celebrate the life of Ernie and his wife.

These are just a few images where I tried to show what a Jazz Funeral is all about.

A friend asked me to get a few shots from a cemetery, so while we were there I also did a few for my project 365.
The sky was bright and clear, so when I opened this one on my computer I was really surprised to see such a shadow in the clouds.

According to this morning's newspaper, we had found our way to the stage of the "older crowd" at Family Gras! I actually don't mind being older, if it meant being with Louisiana's Cajun Sweetheart, Amanda Shaw.
She is an amazing entertainer! So much talent for a 16 year old, and such a beautiful girl.

It finally warmed up yesterday, so my photo of the day project brought me to the lake front. The wildlife seemed to be enjoying the weather too.

As a person still living in the '60's it's hard for me to imagine much less write 2009! :)

I do hope this year brings lots of happiness and good health to all of us.

To keep myself motivated and learning, I am participating in a project 365, which means I need to shoot at least something every day. It's hard, because it is forcing this old brain back to the think mode! But I am enjoying the challenge.

The Mighty Mississippi

I sometimes forget just how powerful the waters of the river are, or how important it is to the economy of the U.S.
Recently a freighter plowed into a barge carrying thousands of gallons of oil, causing an oil spill in the river and shutting down the river for days. This first photo shows the barge being partially lifted. The oil is being pumped out of the barge which will then be cut into pieces so that it can safely be raised out of the river.

Watching this small tug boat maneuver that big barge was amazing.

The Port Authority building is on the river front and makes a beautiful reflection of the Crescent City Connection, the bridges linking the east and west bank of New Orleans.

I haven't been to Jazz Fest in years, and had forgotten how much fun it really is. Sheryl Crow was amazing, she looked great, sounded better and was full of energy on stage.

Yankee Sneaux

When all that sneaux melts it has to go someplace. Lots of it goes into the Mississippi River, and down here to the delta. This year the river is cresting just below flood stage, so to avoid any flooding in the city of New Orleans, the spillway gates are being opened.
Since this is a historical event, we took Miss A to see the opened gates.
Being a windy day, she had to decide on a hat to wear.

The water is tooooooo close to the top of the levee!

Railroad ties are used to hold the water out of the spillway. In groups these ties are being lifted to allow the water to flow from the river thru the spillway and out to Lake Pontchartrain, to avoid flooding in the city.

The force of the water is unbelievable.

Spending the day with Miss A is of course my most favorite thing to do. Yesterday she and I visited my friends Iris Garden. The winds made for a bad hair day, but the flowers were beautiful.

Mardi Gras Indians

The Mardi Gras Indians are a tradition in NOLA, usually seen marching in the Mardi Gras parades. We were lucky to see them this weekend, but they are hard to photograph, as they don't stand still! :)

The old cemeteries are a treasure of New Orleans, and the theft and destruction of the graves has to stop!
